Medical review board

Every graded page on this site is signed by one of these people, with a date. If a page has no name on it, it does not publish.

The board

Board members set grades and own a subject area. Their names, credentials and external identifiers are published so you can check them.

No board members are published yet

Until a reviewer record exists, no graded page can publish — the content pipeline requires an attributed reviewer and a review date.

What a reviewer is accountable for

Concretely, not aspirationally.

  • Checking that every claim on a page is supported by the studies cited on that page, and removing claims that are not.
  • Setting or confirming the grade for each intervention–outcome pair, and writing a justification that is published verbatim in the grade change log.
  • Re-reviewing their pages at least every 12 months, and every 6 months for high-traffic pages.
  • Recusing themselves from any intervention they hold a financial interest in, and declaring those interests annually.
  • Being named. The profile page for each reviewer lists the pages and the grade decisions they are responsible for, which is the only version of accountability that means anything.

Reviewers are paid a fixed fee per review. No part of the fee depends on the grade assigned, on traffic to the page, or on whether a clinic in our directory sells the thing being graded. See the editorial policy for the permission rules, including the fact that editors cannot publish a grade change.
