Life Expectancy Calculator

A national life table lookup, plus the honest caveat that the number describes a cohort and not a person.

This page has no named medical reviewer on file. The equation it implements is published and cited below, but the page itself has not been signed off by a member of the review board, and we do not present it as if it had been.

3 questions. Questions that only apply to some people appear once your earlier answers decide that they do.

From your health data

3 of these questions can be answered from lab results and device data you have already connected: Where do you live?, Age, Sex at birth. Connect them once in your member account and they arrive here pre-filled and labelled as coming from your health data — and you can always type over the value.

Set up health data in your member account

This public page never reads your health data. Pre-filling happens inside the signed-in app, which is a separate, access-controlled surface.

Life Expectancy Calculator inputs

Life tables are national. Countries we do not hold a table for return no estimate.

Used because the reference data and published equations are sex-specific. If your sex at birth differs from your gender, the equations were derived on sex-at-birth cohorts.

Nothing you type is stored unless you are signed in and ask us to save it.

How this is calculated

Formula version lll-life-expectancy-1.0.0

Remaining life expectancy is read from the official period life table for the selected country and sex. Where the member's age falls between two published rows, the figure is interpolated linearly on implied age at death (age plus remaining years) rather than on remaining years, because implied age at death is close to linear between anchors. Ages above the highest published row, and countries with no embedded table, return UNKNOWN rather than an extrapolation. For the United Kingdom the cohort projection is shown alongside the period figure, because the ONS publishes both and regards the cohort measure as more appropriate for a living person.

What it cannot do

  • Period life expectancy assumes current death rates continue unchanged. For a person alive today it tends to understate.
  • Only the UK publishes a cohort table that we could embed; for the other six countries no cohort comparison is shown.
  • No official national life table exists for the United Arab Emirates. WHO modelled figures are used, only two ages are published, and WHO and the UN disagree by about four years.
  • Germany, the UK and Japan publish male and female tables with no both-sexes column, so a sex is required.
  • Reference years differ between countries (2021 to 2024), so cross-country comparison in this tool is imprecise.
  • National averages hide very large within-country variation by region, deprivation and ethnicity.
  • Nothing about the individual enters the calculation. It is not a personal prediction and the band is left UNKNOWN to make that explicit.

The formula version is pinned so that a result you saved or shared can be reproduced. When we change a coefficient, the version changes and old results stay attributed to the version that produced them.

Questions people ask

Can I change this number?
The number is a population statistic and you cannot change a population statistic. The lifestyle literature suggests people with several healthy behaviours live substantially longer on average, but those are observational associations with residual confounding, not a personal quantity you can add to a life table.
Why is my remaining life expectancy higher than I expected?
Because life expectancy at birth includes everyone who died young. Conditional on having reached your age, the expectation is higher — this is the most commonly misread statistic in the whole field.
