Protocols: what to do, in what order

A protocol is a sequence, not a shopping list. Each step names the intervention it rests on, carries that intervention's evidence grade, and says what to measure before you start and after you finish so you can tell whether it did anything.

Steps resting on limited or weak evidence are not presented as actions. They are labelled for a conversation with your clinician, because that is what they are.

No protocols published yet

A protocol is only published once every step rests on a graded intervention and a named reviewer has signed it off. Until then, the intervention pages carry the evidence.

How to read a protocol here

  • Every step links to the intervention page behind it, so you can read the studies rather than take the step on trust.
  • The grade on a step is the intervention's grade for a specific outcome. It is not a claim that the protocol as a whole has been trialled — almost none have.
  • The “not for” note on a step is the part most worth reading. Protocols fail people by being applied to the wrong person far more often than by being wrong.
